The second chapter we read was “What Happens When Your Hood is the Last Stop on the White Flight Express?”. Again this was a very interesting chapter about a woman who went back home to California after becoming a film producer. The writing talks about how she grew up poor in the missions. She refers to her friends that she grew up with children of housekeepers, migrant workers, mentally ill, and bus drivers. She refers to the term gentrification which according to her is the displacement of poor women and people of color. She explains how this has happened where she had grown up that people pushed out the poor people to live where they were living. Many single mothers believe that gentrification is a way for the government to keep the poor, poor by using things such as the minimum wage. One of the words I love from this chapter is a word she adopts to explain herself and that is womanist. From my understanding a womanist is a woman of color that is a feminist. The writer goes on to talk about the fact that even though she now had a good job, money and a good education she was still looked down upon by the rich people that moved in and pushed the poor people out of their housing. This chapter was also interesting to read.
