The first reading for this week was Dutiful Hijas: Dependency Power and Guilt written by Erica Gonzalez Martinez. While reading this chapter I couldn’t help but think about the major differences between our country beliefs and other countries when it comes to women. In our country it seems that all children not just males but females as well are to graduate and move out away from their parents and be independent. Many children may choose to take care of their parents as they get older but it is not an obligation but a choice. It seems that where the writer came from it is shameful to not go back or stay for that matter and take care of your parents. The writer who grew up in South America refers to herself and other women of her same ethnic background as a return on an investment. She explains that it is their job as a woman to return home and take care of their parents, a job that is not required of males. The writer expresses that this is especially true for women who don’t have a husband.
