Chapter 32, Polishing Brown Diamonds, African American Women, Popular Magazines, and the Advent of Modeling in Early Postwar America written by Laila Haidarali is our first reading for this week. The chapter talks about African American women post-civil war and how their lives were changing. More and more of these women were stepping away from the housekeeping and nannying or similar jobs. These women were turning to working in modeling after African American modeling and magazines started to become in demand. Polished diamonds are African American models who started out as rough diamonds when they start to attend the DeVore School of Charm.
