Chapter 22, Japanese American Women and the Creation of Urban Nisei culture in the 1930s by Valerie J. Matsumoto. This essay was interesting to a young American in a different century. The author refers to the Nisei, the Nisei are children born in the United States and Canada who have parents that were born in Japan. This essay focuses on how the Nisei children overcome living in America most specifically she referred to Los Angeles. The Nisei had many groups which they formed such as Girl Scout Troops and baseball teams. They also had specific club dances for their groups. Many of these girls attempted to go against their social norms in accordance to their gender. While in the Japanese culture women kept the household this was still true here as well they still had to keep house. Nisei women also attempted to keep up with the current fashions as well as the way to makeup was worn. The essay also refers to the Issei which are defined as Japanese born immigrants to the United States or Canada. These were the first generation and parents to the Nisei.
